"While it has largely been the case that COVID-19 tends to be less severe in children than adults, the omicron wave has seen more kids getting sick with the disease and being hospitalized, and children may also experience longer-term effects, even following initially mild disease," FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf, MD, said in a statement on Tuesday.
The FDA authorization is specifically for a single booster dose of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine, which is to be administered at least five months after the primary vaccination series is completed. "Since authorizing the vaccine for children down to 5 years of age in October 2021, emerging data suggest that vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 wanes after the second dose of the vaccine in all authorized populations," Peter Marks, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a statement. Experts believe that getting a booster shot is our best bet for continued protection against the virus.
However, lack of regular series vaccinations among children down to 5 years old makes it hard to tell how many kids within this population will actually get boosted. "43.6 percent of eligible children, ages 5 to 17 years old, have been fully vaccinated," according to ABC News, and "an even smaller portion - less than 30 percent - of children ages 5 to 11 years old have been fully vaccinated, and would thus, ultimately be eligible for a booster shot."
This\ news comes just four months after the FDA expanded authorization for a single dose of Pfizer's COVID-19 booster to children ages 12 to 15.

Jessie J is sharing the details of her pregnancy loss for the first time. On a May 2 episode of Steven Bartlett's podcast, "The Diary of a CEO," the "Bang Bang" singer opened up about her experience in what she described as "the most honest, raw, emotional, candid, vulnerable conversation [she has] ever had publicly." She first revealed her loss on Instagram in November 2021 but has since archived the post.
During her nearly two-hour-long conversation with Bartlett, Jessie J explained how the loss unfolded and the toll it took on her mental health. She recalled losing her baby the day before she was set to go back on tour after months of ear and throat issues that prevented her from performing. Despite the tragedy, she still performed the next day.
On the day of her loss, Jessie J said, she felt like something was off and saw two doctors before she got the news. While the first doctor said that her baby's heartbeat was just low, Jessie J had a feeling that it was something more serious. "I just knew something wasn't the same," she said. When she went to the second doctor just hours after seeing the first one, she was told that she had lost the baby.
During the interview, Jessie J also shared that she's struggled with health issues almost all her life. As a child, she was diagnosed with a rare heart disease, and as a teenager, she struggled with strokes as a side effect of her heart medication. As an adult, she was diagnosed with endometriosis, a disease commonly linked to pelvic pain, painful sex, and infertility. Jessie J described during the interview the devastation that accompanied her endometriosis diagnosis, because she knew it would make it difficult for her to have children. From her perspective, it was a miracle that she was able to get pregnant in the first place, so when she found out that she'd lost the baby, she felt "like I had been given everything I ever wanted, but someone said, 'No, but you can't have it.'" Grieving with the loss was isolating, especially since talking about pregnancy loss can be considered taboo. "I've never felt so lonely in my life," the singer said.
Her experience struggling with rare disorders inspired her to connect with other people who've also dealt with pregnancy loss, which happens in one in four pregnancies. "The amount of women and men who have been close to someone losing a baby or are having infertility issues or losing a baby themselves . . . talking about that pain not only helped me, but helped other people," Jessie J said. Working in fashion, I wanted to get a stroller that was super safe and stylish at the same time, and the UppaBaby Vista V2 fit the bill. Not only is the stroller sleek and available in a variety of gorgeous colors (like the Gregory, which I chose, a blue mA(c)lange), but it's also very practical for all that you get at that price point. While more affordable stroller options do exist, I felt that this one had everything I was looking for as a new mom, including the safety features, the look, and the convenience - it so was easy to use. It also looked extremely comfortable for the baby.
One advantage that convinced me to take the plunge was the shock-absorbing all-wheel suspension, which I was able to see in action during my in-person test drive. The wheels glided smoothly over everything from cobblestone to pavement. Besides that, the stroller is customizable and comes with a solid frame and leather accents that feel luxurious without sacrificing functionality. It has ample storage at the bottom for bags (and even my pup!), telescoping handlebars, and a full-coverage canopy that comes in UPF 50+.
I also liked that the Mesa Car Seat fitted into the stroller with the press of a button - literally. The base even has a level indicator which turns red or green to let you know if it's installed correctly, which gives me a ton of peace of mind. It's easy to fold, too - even on my first try, I could do it on my own with no help. So even though the stroller is slightly heavier than its competitors, all of the other pros made that a nonissue for me; I still found it extremely easy to handle.
Another reason why I decided upon the stroller was all of its accessories. The stroller comes with five key pieces: a bassinet, a toddler seat and bumper bar, two bug shields (for the bassinet and the toddler seat), a toddler rain shield, and a bassinet storage bag. Plus, if we plan to have another child down the line, we can add another infant and toddler seat or bassinet, which the competition didn't allow. That was a major plus for us when deciding on this stroller.
Now that it's been a few months since I've had my baby, I have to say that I'm very happy with my decision. I love how easy it is to fold and put in my car, and I really love the shock-absorbent wheels, which make the stroller glide smoothly. As a first-time parent, the safety features really give me a sense of security. And perhaps most importantly, my baby really seems to enjoy the car set, too.
